Round 13 games

Man, Queensland lost. Oh well, guess the Blues have to win one sometime to keep things interesting.

After skipping last week due to rain, its feeling a little quiet in BPL. But just around the corner is the Finals! There are two normal rounds to go, and then on the 20th of June is the semi's, and the Grand Final on the 27th.

On Semi-Final night, we will have placing games as well - so 5 plays 6, and 7 plays 8.

On Grand Final night there will be the usual stuff - now with 200% more prize awesomeness! More info about this later.

Round 12 - May 30th - GAME IS CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN

Hi all, unfortunately the fields are closed tonight due to the weather. Although the rain has died down a bit, there was a lot of it dumped on the fields earlier and its not going anywhere. So no Ultimate for us.

This round will not be replayed. Cobras stay number 1 for another week!

Round 11 - Match Reports and Results

Hi all, results below and then match reviews. And before you read them, grab beer and some nuts, sit down and enjoy another tremendous match summary from the Architect of Brisbane Ultimate, Sensei.

Slamtown beat Heroes 15-8, Cobras 15-11, UQ Lovers beat Bugs 15-5, Blitz 1 beat Blitz 2 15-4.

Heroes - Seb

Slamtown got up over Heroes in pretty convincing fashion, 15 to 8 Thursday night. They valued their possession of the disc and when we gave it to them cheaply they converted with ease. We really shot ourselves in the foot with poor options and skills. Not a lot of positives for the Heroes, only consolation is that we will have a chance to bounce back next week.

Slamtown - Stef

SFC came out to a great start and were able to get a few break points early.  With a comfortable lead we moved the disc with great efficiency on O and used our zone defence to generate turns.  Heroes came close and were patient for 80% of their possessions.  Unfortunately, their red-zone offence let them down as SFC defence tightened up on them.  Coolhand Luke had a big game for the Slammers, and Chris Browns hucking proficiency shows the positive influences of a season in Slamtown.

Dojo - Sensei

You know, one of the problems with having a team made up mostly of dads (or DILFs, as Finn worryingly referred to us - not quite sure what he means by that), is that you never really know what’s going on in the collective minds of the team during a game of Ultimate.

It could range from “Geez I hope Kirstin can get next Thursday night off work”, to “Is it ballet class or soccer on Saturday morning?”, or “oh man another night with 2 hours sleep coming up”, or even “Upsy Daisy here I come, I’m the only Upsy one, I’m the only Daisy doo, ipsy Upsy Daisy doo!”. Okay that last one was from personal experience, and to anyone out there who doesn’t know that disturbing little jingle already, your time will most surely come...

And tonight you’d have to say that most of the Dojo throwers had their heads firmly in the Night Garden as disc after disc went long, generally to a place where no receiver was to be found. We don’t take official stats (yet!) but I reckon if we did we’d find that there were more inexplicable Dojo throwaways than actual goals tonight. A lot more. And that makes it hard to win games.

So on that basis we probably should be happy with losing only 4 points. Cobras played some pretty seamless Ultimate - strewth even Reece barely had a turnover! And the turnovers there were had to be earned by the Dojo defence - one notable mention that must be made is LD Adz making not one, not two but three endzone blocks in a single point! Mostly on guys he wasn’t even supposed to be marking! I won’t mention that he could have saved himself a couple of those blocks by catching the disc in the Cobras endzone. Oh dammit I just did mention it.

So there you go. Not quite epic fail territory but reasonably close. Some serious amends to be made come finals time

UQ Lovers - BW

Fresh off a win from last week we had a bit of confidence going in to this one. Once again we were able to utilise more players on the field each point with a few of our newer players really stepping it up on both offense and defense. Special mention to Josh for getting a few massive Ds on some bigger match ups. Nat was also able to use his height this week very effectively catching a few goals over his defender and Hamish was generating space every time he cut for the disc. Our other rookies are really starting to step it up as well and their confidence with the disc in hand, taking a smart option and gaining yards on throws are all on the improve.

UQ Lovers came off to a pretty good start, putting up some early hucks that mostly completed. On defense we played a mixture of zone and man. The zone forced a lot of throws, but the buggers were more than a match for it and were happy to play the 100-pass offense to beat it. The man defense gave up a lot of yardage was a bit more effective in getting the block. We got up a 4-2 lead before calling a timeout to work on a couple of things. We came out a bit more fired up after that and were able to take it to half 8-2. After half offense scored the first 5 goals to have the score at 10-5 before a marathon point ensued. Both teams had opportunities to score and on about the 10th UQ possession we called a timeout before getting the goal. I think that was the final bit of fight out of the Buggers and UQ were able to score the next 4 points to take the win 15-5.

Match Reports and Results Thursday 16th of May

Hi all, my sincere apologies for the lack of content on the blog - I'll be updating the match reports from previous weeks. Last week's is below, and the table is updated. Here is a life tip - if you take a new job and the boss leaves in the first week, consider investing in beer stocks.

Cobras beat Slammers 13-11, Blitz 1 beat Heroes 15-8, UQ Lovers beat Blitz 2 15-4, Dojo beat bugs 15-7.



Cobras - Troy

So recently I was discussing the possibility of relinquishing the match reports for the Cobras however when I discussed the options with DW a shocking and I mean shocking fact was uncovered. Well two facts, first he had intentions of discussing events within games that relate to frisbee in the match reports, is that even allowed? I thought there was rules against that but I may have invented those rules, it is hard to remember whether things are real or I made them up these days. The other and actually first of these facts is that he thinks that Speedy Cerviche is the best Samurai Pizza Cat, honestly who is this man? Everyone agrees that Polly Esther is the best, come on DW you're better than that. Interesting fact from the other team, Dan Rule proved that not all sayings are true, as not getting a stitch in time didn't cost him nine. (See how I mentioned the game there DW but it actually raises more questions than it answers). After playing Slamtown this week I had the pleasure of visiting their fair town (They're not a city they're a town!), and what I found other than my dignity which I must have left there in 2007, who would have thought that the Gold Coast was where I left it. It really was the last place I would have thought to look. I still don't understand why DW mentioned the Samurai Pizza Cats anyway all I wanted to know was the name of Soundwave's cassette that was like a Jaguar or something. In case it has been bugging everyone as much as it has me, no it isn't Laserbeak, thanks to all the people who offered that. It is Ravage, so many times Ravage killed me in that choose your own adventure book, if only I tried to read it successive time close enough that I could remember how not to die in that part I might have avoided the end so early in the book some of the time.

Heroes - Seb

Blitz got up over Heroes in a pretty convincing fashion, 15 to 8 last night. They valued their possession of the disc and when we gave it to them cheaply they converted with ease. Their zone is also one of the strongest in the league. Not a lot of positives for the Heroes, only consolation is that we will have a chance to bounce back next week.

Blitz 1 - Timocles

This week's game saw Blitz 1 roll out another savage line. Injuries, work and being Canadian had taken their toll on player's bodies and subsequently seen both teams short on numbers. Heroes seemed in a similar situation; a few more experienced players were missing from the gents in green. It wasn't the night for not showing up though with Blitz taking the win 15-8.

With Heroes taking the first point, it looked like we were in for a fight. A few more points saw even 2's. Blitz back on defence, Heroes started to crack under some heavy defensive pressure. Half was taken by Blitz at 8-4. The second half was pretty relaxed from our perspective. No point in getting too worked up, right? especially if you're playing savage and running as the puppy all night. Blitz cruised to the win, and even got a bit of heckling in with Blitz 2 and UQ playing on the adjacent field. The Mulletted Muppet strikes again!

Highlights of the game include a sweet Myall toe-drag to score, Sebastian Brown throwing it straight to the sideline on a swing pass with no one on the field in the immediate vicinity, and an untouchable Myles-Lochie hammer connection that debuted early and didn't stop.

Dojo - ads

Man, I love playing Bugs. For Dojo, its like looking in a red mirror - dinosaurs with awesome throws and younger players (well, young for Dojo is <35) putting in the hard yards. The only difference - Dojo has the height, and without Mike the bugs were looking a little on the short side. Despite this, Dojo took a lot of points from working hard up the middle. The first 20 minutes were hard from both teams, and a lot of zone. Buzz as usual was nailing half field bombs to Jangles, but the Dojo took half around 8-5 and then took the rest of the game in a flurry of points - enough time to watch the Cobras and Slamtown finish. 

Oh, and Sensei joined us after a two week hiatus.

Nationals 2013

A very well earned congratulations to those players who headed down to Bendigo over the weekend. Looked like some awesome games, and although I'm sure Firestorm and Slamtown would have liked to have ranked higher with have some tight games that would have seen them higher, in my books they both played better than previous years.

Holy smokes Batman, its felt like an age since Round 7. We've gone around the teams once, and we've seen a few touch ups and interesting results; the most notable Slamtown sitting in the middle of the pack and Blitz1 going 4-2 so far. The latter has a big game tonight against top of the table Cobras, and on Field 3 we see Heroes and Bugs punch it out.

BPL week off

Cobras - The Brian the B!*$ch and the Floordrobe

A couple of weeks back the Cobras were getting ready to play in a normal way and Dan 2 asked Reece where his correct top was.  Simply the right colour isn't always enough.  Reece said "It's at the clean end of the not clean but not dirty yet pile."
"What do you mean?" Dan 2 asked.
Reece looked at Dan 2 and said "Just look at the Floordrobe, it'll make sense."
When he didn't reappear the remaining Cobras decided that it was time to go investigate what was taking so long, we found no evidence of him.  We started looking under the clothes in case he was hiding and we found ourselves no longer in Brisbane.  Where were we, at first we couldn't tell but then we realised we were in Bendigo, for those who haven't had the pleasure it is basically like Narnia from those books, except dreams die there instead of coming true.  We knew that we needed to find Dan 2 before he became a local, so we set off towards the center of town where we thought we may find someone who could help us.  When we arrive the only rumours we heard about a new comer to town we about a Brian character, we kept telling people that no we were looking for Dan 2 and since we had Dan 1 with us the comparisons and examples of who Dan 2 was were easy to make.  We started to finally get people to say yes I've seen him but then the talk of the B!*$ch started to occur and the advice we got then was to make ourselves scarce.  We talked it through and decided that we're the Cobras how bad could she be?  Yep won't make that mistake again, she was just a terrible person, we were stuck talking to her as she promised to help us locate Dan 2 she said all the clues we needed were in the this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBIjjQNvcY4) but you needed to pay attention all the way through or it doesn't make sense.  She left that that bit out and we had to watch it twice.  When we turned around Dan 1 had actually been turned to stone or at least his heart.  This was surprising as his haircut was still looking good and he had been seen throwing forward.  We ran before things got worse and started hearing about this Brian guy again, the final time we heard about it was a small green man who said "Investigate these rumours you should, if your friend you wish to find."
Turns out to be the best advice I've ever received from someone who needed a shower so much.  We looked until we were ready to give up and then we heard the name Brian being yelled over and over in a voice we all recogniesed as that of the B!*$ch.  We rushed as she sounded a little angry but when we got there we were very dissapointed in Dan 2.  So dissapointed in fact that Dan 1 insisted he not be a Dan any more and his only excuse was that she called him Brian, she was just so annoying.  We sure as hell weren't going to follow in her steps which only left one option to revert him back to his old name of 'Moon Moon' this is what he did to earn that.  http://imgur.com/gallery/aYCs8

Another week and another episode of New Girl for the Heroes, I know that it isn't on TV at the moment but we tracked it down through methods which I assure you are legal and it was totally worth it.  See you all at league folks.

Match Reports Round 7 - 18th April

Hi all, match reports under the results, table updated.

Slamtown beat UQ Lovers (15-4), Heroes beat Blitz 2 (15-6), Cobras beat Bugs (15-8), and Dojo beat Blitz 1 in a nailbiter (12-11).

Slamtown - Stef

I haven't played in the BPL since early November of 2012 as I broke a bone in my foot.  I was very excited to be back.  Slamtown were eager to find form after a less than stellar start to the season.  We did, and put together some exceptional play.  Offensively, we were patient, and worked well from the center of the field.  Defensively, we generated blocks quite regularly, and were able to convert.  Our proficiency enough to frustrate any opponent. The captain of the other team showed some frustration with our volume, and intervention of which we saw from a very different perspective.  The Lovers captain expressed his dismay for Slamtown in the spirit circle with a finger pointing diatribe, though admitting to him be the chief proponent in the altercation.  I chose to defend the conduct of my team, and to happily agree that it was indeed his injection into the conversations that extended and escalated the conflict.  Otherwise, I was ecstatic to be playing again, and can't wait to get to the second half of the season after an even more exciting trip to Nationals in Bendigo.

Heroes - Seb

Last night Heroes soundly defeated Blitz 2 with a margin of 15 to 6. B2 were a bit under strength with their fearless leader Cunliffe turning out for the big brother team. The team was left in Craig's capable hands and he didn't disappoint. The B2 handling was pretty solid with Craig and James working the disc. The team showed good patience against our zone, however, B2 gave us a few too many opportunities to score. Heroes played quite well this week, hitting a number of long shots and moving the disc quickly up the field. Well done to B2 who are coming along really well in their first season!

Cobras - Troy


So for many this seems to have been a sad week, not so if you a lady in Brisbane. Big news Dan 1 has now thrown forward and had a haircut. Now David Attenborough I am not but it is my understanding that in America this is how the male of the species signals to potentials females that he is available. Dan 2 has been kind enough to confirm that is true. So ladies this is an exciting time for you but don't take my word for it we asked BW what he would give up to be Dan 1 right now "Well not my MVP because let’s be honest you'd have to give that back right away because I am the MVP and then it wouldn't count as payment, but most other things." We then came across Cunliffe about the news he simply snapped "I don't know why you ask me you'll just end up misquoting me anyway.” He was later heard to say “Man, I was planning on getting a haircut, he stole my move.”  We then came across Emma Stone and luckily there is this guy who is making a documentary about me and he is following me around with a camera, his name is Rick Salomon and he assures me last time he did this it got lots of coverage.  I asked him what the film was and I turned out as it was something French and I wasn’t in the mood for subtitles.  Apparently the documentary will be coming out in the fall in Brisbane (I don’t know when that is as there are no deciduous trees).  Anyway back on point Emma’s (Yep we’re on first name basis) response will be in the documentary but when she heard the news about Dan 1 this happened http://i.imgur.com/vHqro.gif Oh and if all this wasn’t enough Dan 1 is going to be a doctor so get in early ladies as I don’t imagine he’ll be getting his haircut or throwing forward again anytime soon, this thing is a race.  In fact my sources tell me that the phone calls Dave gets every week when he arrives are girls asking if Dan 1 has cut his hair.

Bugs - Trev

It was another hard fought night for the Buggers up against an in form Cobras.
Our first season player Zev Permack had a stand out game, scoring a significant proportion of the buggers' goals (I lost count at 3). He seemed to sky a number of the taller Cobra defenders without even breaking a sweat.
Another first time Bugger, Luke Sturgess, took a sweet Callahan off of the first pass out of the end zone. The goal had taken everyone by surprise, even Luke.
In all, the Buggs had a sound performance, but against a slick and slithery Cobras offence, it was not enough. As always, the Buggers are a constantly changing team, evolving, growing and continually improving. The season ahead will be an exciting one.

Dojo - Ads
Well, a spectacular game from start to finish. With the greasy disc both teams turned it over twice on the first point. After that it was business time.

For extra ego points, I'll mention that our first point was me laying out (well, I'll call it that). After that, there we traded a few points and Blitz ended up on the right end of 5-3. Dojo then put on a flurry of points to end up taking the half.

It came down to a hammer from Watto, and Pete towing the line in the endzone to win the game (I'm pretty sure it was Universe Point).

Blitz is a force to be reckoned with. They had 7 dudes for most of the game, and the team are the same group of guys that have been together since the start of the team.

Over the last few seasons I remember a few speeches/match reports ending in "Blitz are going to be a strong team, they work well together" blah blah. Well, screw that. They've arrived. They've beaten good teams, and they had the better of us for parts of the match. They'll be there in the semi finals, and it'll take a big effort to keep them out of the big game for any team.

Round 8 (2nd of May) is BEER ROUND!!!!

Quick post to remind everyone that there are no games on the 25th of April. Some dudes with gloves need to go to Bendigo.

So Round 8 on the 2nd of May is Beer round! I'll bring the beer, you bring the mouths. Plan to stay for a few after the game is finished.

Looking for Coaches...

G'day BPL players…

We need another coach to fill a coaching position tomorrow.

We have a session booked for 4 coaches on the Sunshine Coast (Suncoast Chrisitian College).

We will deliver a preliminary coach-the-coach session for the PE staff.

And then we will coach 115 boys (Yrs 7-9), including a game.

We have 3 guys booked to do this and we need one more.

The coaching times are 12.30pm – 3.00pm.

There will be an additional ~1hr drive time (each way).

So it’s probably a 11.20am – 4.15pm commitment.

Remuneration is $35/hr (or $40/hr if AFDA L1) + $15 travel subsidy  = $102.50/coach (or $115 for AFDA L1)

That’s pretty good coin for a few hours coaching Ultimate…..

WHO CAN APPLY:

Anyone who has a working knowledge of the game can apply.  You do not need to be an experienced coach or AFDA accredited.  You’ll be working in a team of 4 coaches.

TRAVEL:

It makes sense to carpool if possible.  If you are interested in doing the above, get in touch and we can talk about carpooling.

The next generation of Qlders playing in the BPL, or at Nationals or Worlds will come from programs like this.  And it's cool to be part of that.

Match Reports Round 6 - 11th April

Table updated. 

Bugs - Trev
It was a testing night for the Bugs. We were savage on the line with our most senior players absent. The Bugs showed their intent early though with a quick two points to start the game. Blitz responded with some clinical offence which made short work of our zone. The Bugs gave Blitz too many opportunities though, which the capitalised on to take half 8 - 3.  Blitz came out firing again in the second half with two quick ones tot take it out to 10 - 3 before the Buggers mounted a comeback not dissimilar to last season's final vs Slammers. Some hard running on D and clinical O, including 4 big goals from new Canadian, Zev got the Bugs back in it but by this stage it was too late and Blitz closed it out at 15 - 10. Big wraps to Blitz who continue to show that they are not the inexperienced team of old and will cause some upsets this season. Well done to the Buggers too. We were the last ones out on the field on Thursday and showed that it ain't over till the fat crusteacean sings. Now for the Cobras

Blitz 2 - Cunliffe

It was the the league leaders versus the league's newest recruits. David and Goliath analogies come to mind. However, to my great disappointment, in this battle David didn't win.

That said, a number of Blitz's proverbial rocks hit their mark during the game, notching up 8 goals to Cobras' 15, but the class actof the Cobras rarely had difficulty moving the disc around the field and gave the Blitz youngsters a candid lesson in executing the simple principles of ultimate.

If they can keep this up they might finally be able to drop the "league underachievers" tag and finally win the BPL crown that many have been speculating they are ripe for...

Match report - Slamtown had a few call ups, and a few no shows........  speaking of which, our offence was a no show.

Dojo smashed us, it was hard to watch.  Slamtown will be licking wounds this week looking to find redemption down the road.

Heroes - Seb

Heroes made a good start to this week's match against UQ Lovers taking an early lead and getting to half with an 8-4 advantage. We then continued our run after half to 12-4 before UQ regathered their composure and traded until the end of the game. Final score was 15 - 8 which gives the Heroes our first win of the season. With over half of the UQ team being new to BPL they are still finding their feet and will no doubt improve every week. BW, Gary, and Bayney do a great job leading the squad

Dojo - Sensei

Epicness.

That’s the one and only word that truly sums up the round 6 clash between Dojo and Slamtown. And it’s not even a real word!

But seriously, how else do you sum up a game that included:

an epic midfield footblock (yeah me)

an epic layout score (Dan Walls sure has still got it)

an epic layout nearly-score (Abraham nearly had it)

an epic hammer score on Stall 9 (Dan Walls again, this time after looking off about 5 dump options and coming very close to an epic fail)

Cobras - Troy
There are a few things that are less disputable than statistics and there is a stat that has recently starting being recorded in ultimate and it is revolutionising the game. I know what some of you are thinking, we already have all the statistics covered: points played, goals thrown, goals caught, turnovers, reasons why they're not Reece's fault and of course pulls dropped. But the new statistic gives us the best guide for who is really changing games. Yes I am of course talking about goal conversions and as far a BPL goes there is a man who is clearly in first place on this stat, second place has been awarded to daylight and then there was such a big gap before the next person that we ran out of daylight and had to award third place to street lights, then I think they the stats showed that Buzz is in forth place. But the man of the moment is the man is Mr. Blue Tooth himself Dave W. We called him for a comment on how he came to be able to dominate a category in such an uncompromising way? Unfortunately the only comment we got was "Hi this is Dave W, I can't take your call right now I speaking with friends, you can leave a message if you want." It is this kind of extreme efficiency that has hurtled Dave W to the top of such a sought after and game changing statistic.

Cobras won 15-9

Blitz 2 -Cunliffe
B2 knew it was going to be a challenge to take it to the 2012 finalists who now have seen the return of some experienced vets to complement some fresh young legs and solid imports, but the young B2 boys didn't shy away from the occasion and were quick to jump to a 2 point league after the opening points.

Though from that point forward the night was well and truly won by the Bugs who ran away to a 15 v 6 victory. Some solid zone got the better of
B2 on most points.

It really was an impressive display of zone with lots of hustle up front from Ferg and Zev, some sneaky poaching and awareness from Jangles in the middle, and some very tall and quick units at the back with Mike and Trev.

Well played Bugs - but the B2 boys are learning quickly and are VERY eager for our second round clash!


Blitz 1 - Myles
Blitz and Slamtown squared off for the first time this season with a total of 15 players across the teams. Slamtown playing savage for the first half were down 0-3 before rallying and taking half (8-7). Blitz was ruined by execution errors early in the game, but reined it in for the most part to play a tight second half. Last point came around with a chance for Blitz to tie the game, but Slamtown didn’t oblige, holding onto the disc to win it 11-9.

Even though Sensei boasted about a new keyboard and a new 'W' key, it was all hot air apparently.

Heroes came out strong, and we matched point for point until around 4. They played hard, and got a lot   of disc for their trouble. They threw long a fair bit during the game, and almost 100% successful. They had a pickup you looked young and inexperienced, but somehow I missed the fact that he was 6'2 and could run. With the rookie tag, he managed to out position and score on some of the best of Dojo's deeps (Hi Pete!) a few times until we stopped being silly.

At some stage we kicked it up a notch and never looked back - a fairly oppressive zone was the main element, but lots of short throws and good cutting worked on offence.

Lets face it, you're all reading until the end to hear about Pete's gloves. Yes he wore them. Yes he dropped about 4 easy catches. Yes he wore them on Monday night. Yes he looked like a cross between Michael Jackson and a giraffe.

Match Reports - Round 4

Hi all, apologies for the delay. Match Reports and results below, Table updated on the right. 

Slamtown beat Heroes (15-12), Blitz 1 beat Blitz 2 (10-9), Bugs beat UQ Lovers (15-8), and Dojo and Cobras... (read the damn match report below!). 

Heroes - Seb

Heroes were left to play savage due to 6 players having Easter commitments. This may have actually helped us, with the 7 players able to get into the game better. We were down by a couple and then up by a couple, taking half 8-7. After half, Slamtown went on a run of 3 or 4 and we were unable to catch them from there. End result Slamtown 15 - Heroes 12. Very enjoyable game and well done to Kalin, Dan and Rob who generated most of the big plays for the Slammers.

Slamtown - Mayor

Slamtown were undermanned, and Gref showed up late, Heroes were undermanned and Strelan showed up late.

Slam went up, Heroes fought back.  Heroes took half 8-7.  Slam had more legs, tidied up late in the game to stretch away for the win.

Good game, good spirit... Chris Brown was in particular fine form for the Heroes.

Troy Booth did something creepy in the not far distance.

Blitz 1 - Timocles

The much anticipated showdown between B1 and B2 had been talked about for weeks. B2, a bunch of new faces led by turnover machine Chris 'The Mulletted Muppet' Cunliffe, were vying for the win against their more experienced counterparts B1; a mix of washed up old people and a few guys who've been around the block a couple times. The rules of combat were simple; winner takes all (although we didn't have much to take) and layout D's mean promotion and relegation for the involved Blitzers. 

The first point saw B1 pulling. A sneaky zone saw a mid-field turnover and B1 with the disc. A few quick passes and it was pretty quickly realised by B1 that B2 had their hustle on; turnover. B2 regained possession and quickly nailed in a score. B2 were up over B1. After a few dumbfounded blinks, B1 regained composure to take half 8-4. A mixture of funky junk and odd forces were used to take advantage of some greenness. After half, it seemed that age made B1 a bit more weary than B2, with a commendable comeback to see the final score 10 - 9 to B1. 

Credit to B2 for fighting back so hard, even with Cunliffe trying to scoober-into-the-stack your game away. Amongst a great show of athleticism, a lot of raw talent is surfacing which will see some very strong Blitz teams in the future.

Blitz 2 - Cunliffe

Well the first Blitz derby didn't disappoint. I'd been geeing up B2 since last week and there had been a lot of smack talk throw on the Blitz Facebook page. And I tell you what B2 came within a bee's appendage of pulling off a massive upset.

So things were looking positive for B2 at the start of the evening with a couple of no shows leaving B1 with only 7 players and B2 in the mood to run hard and get blocks.

B2 started on offence though the first point was a little shaky and included our first turn of the night, but we managed to show a bit of defensive hustle and got it back and eventually jammed it in to take the lead 1 to nil.

The lead was short lived, and a comedy of simple errors saw us down 7 v

1 before B2 got back on a roll and went into half 8 v 4.

B1 came out on offence at the start of the second half but B2 came out of the break with renewed confidence that if we could do the simple things right (ie not drop the frisbee and keep up the defensive hustle) we were every chance of winning the game with B1 running savage in what was a hard running game and it wasn't long before B2 was back on its roll quickly hauling in B1's impressive lead.

But it was too little too late. B2 ultimately ran short on time and we went down to big brother 10 v 9, but I like to think it wasn't before winning their respect.

In the end it was a great game, the B2 boys loved the challenge and were thoroughly spurred on by the prospects of if they got a layout block on their B1 counterpart they'd take their place in the B1 side the following week. And of course this just sets the stage for another cracker Blitz derby later in the season.

Dojo - ads

Unfortunately for the viewers at home, Sensei has refused all calls from his publisher's office to continue to write on the blog, muttering something about quality over quantity, and has taken himself off to the rich person's equivalent of a cabin in the woods (read: cars and golf). So expect more on those topics when he returns. 

The game - holy snappers I can't remember feeling that rubbish, and I looked around at Dojo and they all looked the same - Cobras absolutely smashed us in the first half, ending at 8-1. They were blading/scoobering/running like crazy people, and we couldn't keep up on D. On O we seemed to think we were Samurai Gods, and mere Snakes could not stop us from scoring like towering giants (read: we hucked too much)...all resulting in drops. 

A timeout or two in the first half, and another non-ultimate story from Sensei, and we came back in the second with spectacular results. A sweet throw here or there, but we scored continually from hard running offense, and a super tight zone on D that generated enough pressure to force some drops and turns. All of a sudden the blading/scoobering wasn't working for Cobras, and we stopped giving the disc over. We leveled it up and then were ahead at some point, and then.....

End result - a draw. 13 all. awesome game.

Match Review Round 3 - Thursday the 21st

Match Reports below - congratulations to Sensei, for his very first Match Report.

Dojo - Sensei

It used to be a whole lot easier writing match reports back in the days of video on the Dojo blog (before Slamtown stole all our IP, abused it terribly and then inexplicably shut their blog down - seriously when did that happen???!). Yep back then all I had to do was buy a video camera, convince someone (thanks Marijke) to film the whole game every week, turn all the raw footage into point-length clips, stitch them all together into something vaguely watchable and then wait for maybe 18 or 20 hours as they uploaded to youtube via my rural wireless connection... Simple!

But now I've got to type, type, type, and I still don't have a functional "w" key after breaking it on an online gaming "w+m1" bender a few years back. See that "w" back there? That was a ctrl+v of a w I

ctrl+c'd out of a www. link in the browser window. So every time you

see a "w", just think of me sitting here, laboriously remembering to hit ctrl+v instead each time I need one, which is a lot.

So let's keep this brief. Dojo surprised itself by ripping in 3 quick goals off the bat, then took a rest until halftime (8-7 Dojo), then, after an inspirationally rousing, sage-like halftime speech about the meaning of "quality" from the Sensei, powered home to what in my recollection was something like a 15-8 win.

The old (and occasionally young) Bugs are still fighting as hard as ever, but their lack of fresh legs on the night didn't help them against a Dojo team that you've got to admit is looking pretty darn strong this season... :-)

In this humble writer's unbiased opinion, the MVP from Dojo was without a doubt Sensei Cameron. That halftime speech was simply epic, as was his valiant attempt to chase down a ridiculously long and disturbingly premature huck from Andy "Big Mac" McLean, ending in what may not be strictly classified as a layout but certainly involved the removal of much skin from forearms and hips...

Bugs MVP? That'll have to remain a secret until the votes are counted at the end of the season.

Blitz 2 - Cunliffe

 Well this game was earmarked to be one for the ages, and it did not disappoint. A tight battle the whole way. Worthy of being the showcase game on field 1!

Blitz started on D, but UQ had little trouble sticking the first point of the game in. Blitz was initially struggling more than UQ to keep their offence clean with a few cheap turns (often due to yours truly) prior to getting a scrambling D and jamming it in.

Blitz eventually got a break about mid way through the first half and we proceeded to trade for the rest of the half with Blitz going into it up

8 v 7. After half Blitz came out, consolidated, and not to long after that picked up another break and ended up winning by 3 or 4.

UQ put on a good show, with some nice disc movement and good handling from the likes of BW and Baynes.

Ryan was definitely missed being injured on the sideline. And with both teams developing a lot of young players this season, our rematch in the second half of the season will no doubt be a nail biter.

Cobras - Troy

So we have all noticed that Slamtown like to be the centre of attention hence the orange and all of the noise whenever they make the least impressive play that has ever been made.  However it has dawned on them that potentially their play won’t cut it in order to keep in the lime light and have now taken to imitating current events.  In light of this new plan they decided that Labor Party’s leadership challenge was the event they wished to imitate.  They however probably should have paid a little more attention to the outcome of this as at the end of the day there had been little to no internal fighting in Canberra and Julia Gillard continued to show up to things.  By the end of the night Slamtown seemed to lack an offensive policy and were a bit of a shamble you could even say they started to resemble the Greens.

At the other end of the field when we look at the Cobras what we found can best be described in song.

Blitz 1 - Jmac

Blitz has a strong record against Heroes, and though both teams displayed some early shakiness, a run to take half 8-3 boded well for us to continue in this fine tradition. It wasn't to be, as the Heroes managed to maintain level heads and take some good shots against our zone, and cracks appeared in the Blitz mental game. It seemed we'd checked out early, thinking the job was done, and while we took a comfortable victory on the scoreboard, we were anything but comfortable with the way we played at the end. However, a win is a win, and we'll take it. Blitz derby game next week - fun times ahead.

Heroes - Seb

In great throwing conditions, Blitz came out with early intensity and aided with a number of silly Heroes options to the end zone they ran away with an early lead which they maintained to take half at 8-3. Heroes were able to make a bit of a comeback but it was too little, too late. End result was 12-9 to Blitz. Well done to Blitz who played very well as a team across their roster.

Bugs - TJ

The Buggers this week again showed that they are not to be written off this season despite the dramatic change in their line up. Although they fell short in their quest to overcome their old Foes, The Dojo, the performance showed the potential that exists. With several key players and just a lone sub, it was a tough night for the Bugs, particularly when Dojo came out to take a 3-0 lead in the early stages. The Bugs weathered the onslaught and they were able to rally to take it back to 4s. The Dojo managed to hold their nerve to take half, which was followed by a second half of trading goals before the Bugs ran out of legs to go down 15-10.

Some exciting play from this season’s MBB rookies, including an impressive layout from the latest North American BPL import, Zev Permack showed that the Bugs stables aren’t just for the ‘Old Stallions’.  The Dojo played well for the majority although did seem to be slightly off their usual high quality game. Perhaps they felt the tension of having the now Infamous Bugs defector, Graham ‘Special’ Prickett in their ranks (although he did show why he will be an excellent recruit with a solid performance!).  The Bugs will settle in the depths of the Moreton Bay sands, regroup, and come out next week firing against UQ. Interestingly, the MB Bug is officially known as Thenus Orientalis although this may be slightly more difficult to call from the sideline. Food for thought anyway.

UQ Lovers - BW

A little bit easier game on paper for the UQ lovers against another team of nearly fresh rookies. Both teams got off to a slow start with a few turns from misthrows happening early. The first half remained pretty tight before blitz took it 8-7. In the second half blitz were able to bring a bit more defensive pressure and take away our first few options and make us force some throws. Unfortunately we weren't able to do the same with our man defense, somehow the deep hucks from cunliffe were still being completed at a decent percentage.

It was a really good learning game for the Lovers. We were in it for a long portion of the game, up until the second last point. It might be a few more games again before we get an opportunity like that.
