Elite Frisbee Men....
It's been put on the table for a couple of seasons, but now it's going to happen...
The Gold Coast will host a round of the BPL this season.
About time too probably.
Slamtown have been a strong presence in the competition for a number of years now and as reigning champs have more than earned this right. They've clocked up thousands of Ks travelling up and back from the GC and Byron ... so its time that the Brisbane players reciprocated.
Mayor Stefan has booked fields for 10th May with a backup date of 17th May if its rained out ... like that will ever happen....
Details to follow in due course, but everyone should start planning their travel arrangements for this round. Team Captains should probably take the lead on it and ensure that their teams are sorted and that they'll have a sufficient line for the night. It would suck to forfeit for want of a bit of organisation.
Hopefully Stef will be able to raise a bit of local support? And perhaps some media attention? And maybe a few fizzy drinks for the BrisVegans before the trip home????
Another big step for the BPL, now we just gotta work out how to permanently get a 7th (or 8th!) team and we'll be sitting pretty. Hooray for Open ultimate in Queensland!
ReplyDeleteJust a matter of time. Bris Ultimate will grow. The BPL will grow. In 18 - 24 months and we'll be playing across 2 different venues with an 8 team league. It'll happen.
ReplyDeleteI hope this doesn't hurt the Brisbane based teams, some of which have players who finish work/uni in just enough time to make it to Annerley for the games so may not be able to make it down the coast. Definitely time to reward the GC crew for their many years of travel though.
ReplyDeleteI think they are staring a bit later to allow some time to get down there.
ReplyDeleteJangles is right, we're planning a few things that should help the Bris folk out with timing. In saying that, wetnose is right though... GC travel up every week, and on raining days I get my text at 4.30 from Stef saying their leaving!
ReplyDeleteCheers Ads, we really do appreciate this as a test run, and hope that it can become a seasonal fixture... At pick up tonight we had great interest, and I suspect we'll get a good bunch of spectators. We're looking into bbq and bar, and to make a proper spectacle out of it.
ReplyDeleteWe realize that we indeed signed up to play in a Brisbane League, and that re-arranging our work and personal lives in order to get there every thurs is a choice we've made, and that it should not be imposed on the league to reciprocate.... but I think in the name of growing the league, growing interest in the GC, and QLD as well... elite development, a round down here is an excellent strategy for the league, and the region..... it's a great start.
I think that any resistance that was shown when this was an option will not be evident now that it is a fixture. All those that deliberated... will pull the finger out, get on the highway, and understand the camaraderie that comes with the weekly roadtrip... teams will bond, and then realize why SFC wants to win so badly every week. And for those keen for a drink on the return trip... the SFC bar is set at 9 beers... come at me yo.
And yes... our departures begin at about 5pm... and we're scrambling to figure out if it's worth initiating the trek or not when wet....
In the end... it's always worth it.
Lovin the BPL... lovin the step forward.
So... with all that love, can we get a table update... I want to see who's out in front.
A great initiative.
ReplyDeleteJust to put it out there, another concept/model I have raised in the past is to have an additional BPL competition (a Plate maybe), in the form of weekend tournie and make Byron the Venue (especially now they have a feature field.
You could either play all teams in round robin (ie 5 games) and then a final spread over two days. Or perhaps 2 pools and a final contained within 1 day. And maybe, being realistic, you just wouldn't get all teams anyhow. Maybe just 4 of the 6. But you'd still have a good day of play and a night of boozing in town. Now that would be fun. I think Badman might be up for it.
T-Ross.
i know its all booked but maybe it would work to have a friday night edition of the BPL on the coast... We can start later and finish later (not worrying about work in the morning for the majority of the players) and all plan to have a league party at SOMEONEs beach house after??? Id def be keen to make it into a *long* weekend down on the coast.
