Wow, what a game. Of course I'm a little biased, because DOJO WON. That's right, Dojo Mojo beat out Slamtown on a slippery night. Some comments on the game below, as well as some awards.
Short match report (can some people on the sideline or others please comment on the game, I didn't see everything) - Slamtown got off to a great start (3-1), and Dojo came back with a few points to level it. After that it appeared Dojo was in control taking the half 8-5. There was some pretty sustained play from both sides after halftime with a point to each, and then Dojo threw on several points in a row, eventually finishing the game 15-9.
Some awesome moments I saw...
* Leon D'ing a disc to the ground instead of catching it for a Callahan on the match winner point. A vigorous face-palm followed.
* Gref making several spectacular layouts, putting a lot of pressure on Pete to defend
* Al Don sprinting the length of the field (two defenders giving up on the disc) to layout in the end zone for a score!
* Leon with a few handblocks a few metres from the oppositions line
* Dan Walls pulling everything down with style, even making my crap throws look good
* Buzz teaching his daughter the finer points of heckling
* Carl wearing a scarf like he lives in melbourne.
Okay, some Winners for the night/league.
* Spirit Winners - narrowly hedging out Dojo, Blitz took the Spirit award for the season! The prize was a carton of beer, last seen being cradled by a running Jack Allan.
* MVP Winner - A well deserved Mat Ryan took the MVP for the season, winning by a good margin. Not many people run as hard as this guy all game. Mat won an awesome stretch baselayer/playing shirt with our new Logo (Story Bridge!) on it.
* Winners of the BPL Grand Final - Dojo Mojo drank a well deserved carton of good beer, and Dojo Sensei Stephen Cameron took home a sweet Mountain Designs Softshell (black of course) - I figure the Captain deserves some special attention for bringing the team this far.
* Best on Field for the final - Dan Walls took this out, the crowd enjoying his dominance in the air.
A final winner is Andy McLean (currently residing in Melbourne), winning the first BPL tipping competition, surpassing his recent victory as Captain of HOS Black winning the Div 2 Nationals. I didn't update this for a few weeks as it was obvious that he'd beat everyone by enough to win it. As a former Dojo player, I'd expect nothing less. Gore-Tex jacket email coming your way Andy.
Thanks for everyone's kind words to me for running the league, I've had a blast. Thanks heaps to the TJ for setting out the field last night, and a few Blitz guys who packed it up. A special thank you to the WUFL girls headed up by Sam and Anna-Lise for manning the BBQ and the beers, and Molly on the hot chocolate.
Okay, if you've made it this far - sign up to the Winter League!!

Hey Adz, that was some nice work. Great season for the new BPL LD. Well done and thanks. Some excellent play in the final from both teams with the Dojo proving they were the best team all season by winning the minor Premiership and then reclaiming the RC Dog Cup in the GF. Thanks to Stef and SFC for making it an entertaining season and an entertaining final.
ReplyDeleteThe BPL continues to evolve and improve, with continual improvements and innovations. The big (& continuing challenge) will be to continue to draw talented rookies up into the comp and to develop them within their teams. We all carry some responsibility for this.
But we also need to ensure that the existing teams are stabilised, and ready for the next season, and that isn't a gimme. Team Captains need to get onto this ASAP; to assess their team's viability for the coming season. If you need help with numbers or anything else, you absolutely have to get in touch to let us know. There are things we can do to help.
A meeting is scheduled for BPL Captains/Leaders/Thinkers shortly and all interested parties should attend.
Well done again Adam. And I reckon that you also played a great game in the final.
Catch you soon.
