Blitz - Craig
At about 4pm it became apparent that we were going to
have a couple guys missing, including 'Thornberry'. However, we managed to pull
together 8 dudes on the night. Heroes on the other hand, had what looked like
an entire tribe. Heroes came out on D, upwind. They got the brake. However,
Blitz punched in a downwind score in reply. 1-1. Blitz came out on D.
and stayed there for the largest part of the night, with
the Heroes handlers not getting a great deal of help from the poppers and the
Blitz zone resulting in several brakes. Blitz managed to take half at 8-1.
After the halftime break, Heroes came out and broke back
with 2 quick scores. But they wouldn't trouble the scoreboard again for the
rest of the night. Unforced errors, and overly risky shots into the endzone for
the conditions, by the somewhat frustrated Heroes, is what was the real
difference on the night.
Final score, 15-3. Blitz win.
UQ Lovers - BW
A game on a windy night, i felt the toss was going to be
pretty important. Although we lost it, we got what we wanted - going downwind
on offense. A few traitor calls and an invitation to chuck on the orts again
thrown my way and we were ready to play. Junk seemed to be the flavour of the
night with points being traded on offense and downwind until we were up 4-3 and
called a timeout. After getting a block we were able to convert in to the
wind and go up 5-3. Slamtown were able
to punch it in upwind very quickly while we struggled the point after to keep
the lead at 2, 6-4. Although that'd be the last point we could take before half
as our defense started to falter and the slammers defense rose in intensity.
They were able to capitalise on shortfield turnovers where we weren't able to
set the defense we wanted and quickly hit the mismatches or throw to the 'break
side' when we had the wrong force on.
That run looked
very comfortable for slamtown and they continued it out of half to get up 9-6.
Our offense never really lost its touch, just a couple execution errors. Coming
out of half we were able to get our down wind points a lot more easily or if
there were turns able to get that pressure on defense to force some more
blocks. Getting our downwind point and then going on a minirun getting the
upwind point followed a downwind block and score meant we were back in the game
at 9s. The hooter going when we were down 10-9 with possession going down wind
but unable to get it in after about 5 tries. A scrappy finish to a game that
Slamtown seemed to want it a lot more than us. A little bit of internal
combustion on the part of both teams throughout parts of the game as plays
didn't go as planned.
A catch by abra towing the line to tie it at 6s, which
was thrown down the breakside seemed to really fire up the slammers and some
high pressure defense across the board made it really hard for our offense
working upwind. A few great plays by us, we had Mitch catching a super floaty
throw by some chump over the top of their talls for the score. Bayney getting
another layout grab just off the ground in a position very similar to last
weeks.
Heroes - Seb
Heroes
vs Blitz, final score was Blitz up 15 to 3. For every point we scored, they
managed to put on 5. Blitz had a tight zone that they ran all night and with
the conditions favourable for such a defence they really gained confidence
early on and never looked back. When we didn't make short field turn overs in
the handling line we were often seen hucking the disc down Chris
Cunliffe's throat. On our part it was a pretty woeful performance and we look
forward to giving Blitz a better run next round. Blitz put in a really solid
effort and are greatly improved since last season. Cunliffe leads the way with
multiple touches and good long throws each point, Timocles was a mongrel puppy
and great on the turn, Spesh and Craig Behrendorff ran all night, and Ben Van
Den Hoogenband (spelling?) chipped in with a number of great long grabs.
Cobras - Troy
All season we have been looking for
the metaphor that best describes Cobras. At some point it became so obvious
Bloons! If you don’t know what Bloons is please comment below and we will send
Wetnose around to kill you as your life has little to no meaning and it would
best to put you out of your misery. Anyway back to why Bloons equals Cobras, at
first much like Jules in Pulp Fiction at first thought he was the good, beset
on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men (Yeah
I watched that movie more than once, as I still sadly know that quote). I at
first thought Cobras were the balloons, attempting to float free but being held
back by the weight
of expectation with other sides
throwing hurtful darts in our direction. Then much like Jules was forced to
realise that this was not the case and he was in fact the evil men and that
Brad was the weak (Even though he had a Big Kahuna Burger), I have been forced
to realise that we are the Monkey. We look at a team and then we go about
popping their hopes and dreams, when the task seems like it should be too hard
we have managed to find a power up and get through to the next level. We hope
that as the weeks continue to pass by the power ups continue to show up at the
right time and the run can continue as BPL seems to be less keen on the try
again function than Bloons. Cobras 15-10
Slamtown - Stef
On a windy Thurs, we were
very ready for our first win of the season... and knowing that we had the
leagues expansion team on deck, we were not ready for any more surprises.
We got the win, but it was ugly. UQ played well, credit is most certainly deserved. BW, Baynes, Garry, and Tyson are a very handy foursome, and the new lookin fellas were getting the job done.
UQ dictated the pace of trading for a while... and then before half, we went on a 4 point run... we looked pretty good for those four points... but pretty ordinary for most other portions of the game. Mike Morgs reckons we had 20 drops... sounds about right.
Not subrisingly, UQ were right back in it... it got to 10-9 when full time expired, and the next point would either give UQ a draw, or us the 2pt win... and the point was epic... horrible for any spectators, but fully intense on the field... after about 4 possessions each... SFC finally put one in, and are now happy to relish in our first win of the season. We are excited about the shape of the league this year, and are gonna be comin out swingin
Dojo - Ads
Emails were flying about who was turning up, and I was thankful for the slightly larger roster compared to previous seasons. We had a few missing, but the Cobras win was down to their hard man defense on up wind points, and very few turns in the windy conditions. Dojo uncharacteristically turned some in the wind, and Reece was cutting and popping like a crazy man, keeping Coops busy on D for most of the night.
Cobras got a bloke with us going down wind, and I'm sure that gave them some confidence. They put a couple on us, but we chased them down to within one fairly quickly. At around 5-4 we turned successive discs over to them, and they scored with impunity, taking the half. After that we were matching point to point, but didn't get big breaks
Moments of the game was the ridiculous hammer thrown by Daz and caught by Watto, and a similar hail mary thrown by (Ryan?) and caught by Pete as it was swinging down on the back of the end zone line. The Cobras tried a few unexpected long points, which came off at times, but in a comedic moment there was a huck off the pull put up for Reece in the end zone, and four Dojo players standing around him to deny him the disc. Scored in a similar fashion 2 minutes later though.
I played Bloons for the first time yesterday, Troy you've hit the nail on the head. Cobras put you into a transe-like state. Minutes melt into hours, which then melts the cheese on your bread on your first break from the game 6 hours hours later. They steal your life force away, leave you with no hours in your day. That shit...is cray.
