Match Reports 11th October

Slamtown - Stef
SFC came out firing  and Heroes had no answers... Half time was 8 - 3 to SFC... and then 9- 3... That's when the Heroes found some Mongerel and won 4 hard fought points in a row to bring it to 9 - 7.  SFC regained composure and fought to extend their lead once again, particularly in the late going getting the last 2 goals to win by 5 .... 15 - 10.... as predicted on the Power Rankings.

George and Myall were a handful as suspected, and newcomer Angus had a few sweet grabs.

Slamtown had 13 on the roster again.... and had no problem rolling lines.
Catch you Heroes guys next week…..

Blitz - Cunliffe

With Blitz coming off a big loss to Slamtown last week we felt we needed to go back to fundamentals and we knew with Cobras being the top of the table (though suspiciously never the top of the power rankings) that there is no better team to benchmark yourself against and with the race for that 4th final spot truly heating up and looking like it will come down to goal difference, every goal counts and every goal conceded hurts.

The game started with Cobras sneaking away to an early two point lead but it wasn't long until Blitz was back within one. Cobras had a good little run the middle of the first half due to a couple of costly Blitz mistakes at the front of their endzone, cracking under some good Cobras zone defence, and went on to take half 8 v 5. Cobras started on offence in the second half but it wasn't long before Blitz managed to peg the league back to one with some good zone defence of its own, but Cobras didn't get to the top of the BPL table being a team that cracks under pressure, and Cobras with some patient handling from the likes of Troy, Reece, Bryan and Man Baby saw them hold their nerve and push the lead back out to two and the rest of the game was spent trading, before Cobras closed it out 14 v 11.

Bugs - Mat
Woo Hoo!  Bugs finally broke their Ninja Hoodoo with a solid 15-10 victory on the dark field.
(NB: These reports are so much more enjoyable to write when your team wins… I now understand why the Cobras carry on with so much crap in their reports….)

It would be fair to say that we came to this game with some uncertainty.  Our season so far hasn’t been exactly stellar and we probably deserve to sit second bottom on our form.  But we also know that the Dojo aren’t in their prime and without Pete and Coops this was probably the night to take them.  That said, we were missing Tony with a self diagnosed Grade 2 tear in his adductor and Tim Webb who was wrestling with a Grade 3 rift in space-time.

We started off with a break point and were never headed.  We achieved a 2 point lead and then traded until about 5mins to go.  Then put on a couple of quick points after line blocks to take it out to a 5pt game.  Funny how the game wasn’t really in the bag until the very end, and then also funny how it blew out right at the very end.

A post-mortem of the game wont be forthcoming because reiterating the game online after it’s been played is kinda tedious, and we certainly wont be providing our opponents with a detailed analysis of our strengths, weaknesses and favoured strategies, because that always seems weird and frankly a bit dumb.  Neither will I confirm or deny that the entire Buggers team has been involved in the most professional and consistent doping program in the history of our sport.  That’s up to you to prove and none of us will willingly admit to anything.  If you feel that the contents of Tony’s fridge might have something to do with our late season resurgence, you are of course free to make that claim.

So the season is finely balanced with a bunch of teams sitting on 3 or 4 wins.
But it would be an unhappy fool to write the Buggers off from here.

Whilst the Buggers have a long history of BPL success to draw upon for inspiration, the team who’s performance we could look to emulate at this point might be a little known, short lived team from 2004 (or was it 2005?).  “Big City” went through the regular season WITHOUT WINNING A SINGLE GAME, getting smashed week after week.  But due to the beautiful consequence of only 4 teams participating in that season, Big City earned (a most euphemistically liberal use of the term in this context I admit) themselves a place in the semi.  Well.  I think you can all guess what happened next.  They put together two flawless victories to claim the trophy and create history.   KerChingg.

The moral of the story is that you cant write off anyone in this game, not while there is the teeniest, tinyest, wafer thin whiff of a chance.
Even UQ are still in it.  (Of course it would take a freaking enormous miracle, but it’s still a mathematical possibility.)

Perspective is everything:  The Buggers have had 3 wins from the last 4 games (their only loss being by 2 pts to SFC 3 weeks ago).  They’ve scored 56 pts and only given up 43.  It is true that our early season sucked but the numbers are looking pretty solid right now.  Ominous even……

Man, I don't like losing. It sucks. With my LD hat on I love the fact that we have so many competing teams, and no game is a given. Makes for a much stronger league, and every game is enjoyable. For a few hours on a thursday though, I don't want give up a single point, and we did just that against the Bugs. Our defense was okay, not many blocks but stifled their options to small gains most of the time. Our offense however struggled, especially with Coops and Pete away. The Bugs didn't have the same problems, with Buzz playing as good as I've seen him play - throwing his body around to create options for the dump, throwing some pinpoint long shots and some wonderful inside outs around the mark all night, keeping his guys rolling up the field. Last week, we should have won - disc in hand, up on the scoreboard, and gave it away to Heroes. This week, we didn't give it away, Bugs took it from us. They played like a team ready for the finals, if they keep it up I reckon they'll roll some of the teams up the top.

Heroes - George
Slamtown came out fired up for some revenge on their first round loss, and it paid off with some clinical and controlled offense putting plenty of points on their side of the scoreboard. Heroes suffered from not doing the simple things too well in the first half, turning over the disc from drops and throws not quite hitting their marks. We struggled to get the disc moving at times under the tight defense that Slamtown put on throughout the game. Heroes showed some fighting spirit though and came back a little in the middle part of the game, but couldn't quite lift enough to match it with the orange shorted boys.

  2. It seems we were censored but we did write one and here it is.

Last week in an amazing effort the women's league played across 5 fields. This week though was meant to be beer round and the women have been reduced back to their usual field numbers. Cobras win 14-11.
