Slamtown - Mayor
SFC are back to playing the same brand of ultimate that has had the league quivering in fear in seasons past, though this brand is even better.
In a battle to separate between 2nd and 5th place, most of the league anticipated a close battle, but SFC would have none of it.
A dominant performance from the word go, SFC rolled 13 players to a one sided victory, while Blitz toiled with some internal combustion.
A general lack of composure with the disc would be Blitz' undoing, but a large part of that came from the smothering D by the boys in orange.
An 11 point victory, is just what SFC needed to springboard themselves into the second half of the season as the look to extend on their 4 game win streak, the longest current win streak in the league.
Bring on the Heroes.
Blitz - Myles
This week saw Slamtown v Blitz, in a round where Blitz would
be looking to come out on top of the four way tie for second and Slamtown
wanting to get some consistent wins. In the breezy conditions, the variety of
zone defences Slamtown threw down were very effective in forcing handler
errors. The Blitz defence made it difficult for the Slammers to convert these
turns, and created some drawn out points. Goose got a layout score to gee
himself up, but to their credit, Slamtown got more scores, played solid D, and
kept Blitz to 5.
Slamtown win it 15 – 5, possibly showing their comeback to form,
or just teaching Blitz that they’ve got to work for it.
UQ Lovers - BW
Bottom of the table clash, I am sure both teams really
wanted to get some much needed points on the board. Lovers started on downwind
d and were able to get the block with some zone defense followed by a quick
score. Excluding a few Tony Ross goals in the end zone, we were looking pretty
good for the first handful of points and went up 5-2 with a mixture of
fast-paced offense and containment defense. Bugs called a timeout at 4-1 which
netted them a couple break backs but we were able to grab them both back just
before half. After a very long zone defense point which switched to man just
outside the endzone while up 7-5, we were able to snatch an intercept in the
endzone before a nice 1 pass offense was snatched to take half 8-5. Coming out
on O after the break, the buggers seemed to change up the defense a little. A
little bit more mongrel and shutting down the resets a fair bit more they were
able to force our mistakes and generate a few blocks to go on an 8-0 romp in
the second half. A point after timecap for us finished it at 13-9 to Buggers.
Mat ryan grabbed a couple over the top of numerous lovers while the buggers
were down to keep them in the game, and then a lot of movement through the
middle of our zone from their whole team kept them on that large run.
The game was a little marred by some calls, and lack of
rules knowledge on behalf of some of the buggers that I thought would have
otherwise known better. Not knowing marking infractions, getting upset when
they are called, and unnecessary backchat by players both involved in the
process and outside of it. The BPL is meant to be a respected and we as the
players are the referees so knowledge of the rules is paramount. I have no idea
when it became ill-mannered to call players out on infractions/fouls or when it
became a thing of disgust to let other players know the rules when they are
ignorant of them.
Dojo - Ads
Despite my pleas for Sensei to write a match report for a game we lost, I'm typing away. I'd love to be writing that it was a hard fought game on both sides but Dojo prevailed, but we didn't. We had the disc in hand on last point call, and we threw some rubbish into the ground, and Heroes scored. Probably a good example of what happened most of the night, Heroes man defense shutting down a lot of options, and Dojo throwing a lot of discs and eventually not completing. The game included some monster points. The slight wind didn't appear to effect too many throws from either team.
Heroes took some 50/50 options on offense for a lot of the game, and a lot of those came off.
On defense, Dojo sorely missed Fatty, he slows the disc down considerably on the mark, and Heroes got a lot of short disc movement thanks the Silent, Matty B and Myall.
For Dojo, this is a good benchmark of where we're at, Middle of the pack, needing to get some confidence and start smashing the other teams like we know we can. For Heroes, they've had a cracker of a first half of the season where they've knocked over Dojo, Slamtown and Bugs. No matter the current form of those teams, thats a big accompliment when you look at the last few years of BPL Finals history. Seb and George, you guys should be bloody proud.
Did I mention Fatty was away? :)
Buggers - Mat
BW gave a pretty good summary of the game so no point in repeating the blow by blow details. But it's worth noting that UQ have given a bunch of teams a good run in the season so far and certainly gave the Buggers a scare in the first half. The Buggers 7pt run in the second half doesn't adequately describe the contest, nor the quality of the UQ line. UQ have some throwing and athletic depth and came to the game with some confidence after their recent AUG experience. It'll only be a matter of time before they take a scalp, and the Buggers are actually pretty happy to come out of the game with theirs intact.
Credit to the Buggers that they made the necessary structural adjustments and showed the composure to erase the half time deficit and regain control of the game. That will be some comfort to us as we head into the 2nd half of the season, but it wont mean much unless we convert that into some victories and claw our way up the table.

Not sure that the Bugs would agree with the sentiments expressed in the UQ report about the match being spirit marred. It certainly was a competitive game at times but whatever tensions were felt on either side were pretty well restrained and the incidental debates were reasonably civilised. No one got out of order at any point and some sensible intervention between Captains occurred to clarify points when it was needed. No dramas.
Cobras Match report in lieu of Buggers:
ReplyDeleteIt was a warm night and the Cobras came with a short roster which was always going to make it hard to get the win. Our co-founder and captain was nowhere to be seen.
All the signs still looked good for the Cobras early however then there seemed to a few skill errors creeping into there play. At the half way point the numbers were bolstered by the arrival of Dave and during this break fluid intake seemed a key to the survival of the team to the end of the encounter.
From here the team rallied and looked like it was going to a another regulation night for the Cobras however Alex went down it looked as though he may have been shot and the only potential contact was from Finn.
Once again despite this early exit from the proceedings the Cobras rallied in part due to change in demographic of the fans that were present it was as though this team wanted to make the fans understand just how good they were. From here we struggled with some of the basics and then Caleb went missing he was eventually located and in good spirits. At the end of the night the Cobras walked away with their head held high except when Reece departed this happened http://www.hahgay.com/ . Cobras had the bye.
