Match Reports 25th October

Hi all, apologies this is so frack'n late... something in Google land meant I posted this on the weekend, and no trace of it can be found.

Cobras - Troy

As Dave arrived at the fields, late for most people but early for him, he seemed lost and walked around for some time drinking but mostly spilling milk and saying "At least it's not too hot." At some point he gave up on this method and just yelled "Cobras team, assemble!" Troy responded at this point to say "Hey, Dave we are right here, behind you, in fact we have been here literally the whole time you have. How did you not see us given that in our new uniforms we are really, really, ridiculously good looking?" To commemorate this event, the unveiling of the new uniforms, Reece built the Cobras frisbee centre for kids who can't play good and wanna learn to do other stuff good too which he claimed was full size, Wetnose disagreed and said that only he could fit there. However Matt's reaction was somewhat more extreme "This tiny house makes me angry and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry." Reece refused to move or resize the centre and suddenly "Matt smash!" So the short version of this new (Yep this is the short version) is that there will be no Cobras frisbee centre for kids who can't play good and wanna learn to do other stuff good too for the future generations. Cobras win 13-12

Slamtown - Stef
SFC came firing out of the gates last night, and opened up a 5-1 lead in no time.  Some hard fought points in the early going, but the Slammers were able to punch in the tough ones.  With a myriad of defensive looks, and a 'keep em guessing' attack the Dojo were not able to find their feet against the lightning fast Slammers.  Slamtown were able to take decent shots down field all night, and as such, were afforded the luxury of many open unders for the majority of the match.  A new face in the SFC attack seems as though he might be the next generation of SFC talent.  With no Gref or Kalin in the line up SFC used their new weapon to slow down Pallen, and the rest of the match ups fell in favour of the orange.  Slamtown never looked back, and won by 15- 8, more than 10min before time cap.  Now on a 6 game winning streak, consisting of wins against the whole league, SFC feels they have made up for their dismal start, and are hungry to continue to roll.

UQ - BW
A night where we knew we were going to be short with a couple guys pulling all nighters for uni and a couple other absentees, it wasn't looking very good when game on was called and we only had 6 while blitz had just found a 7th member. For the second week in a row, we versed a team missing 3 key players (Cunliffe, Spesh and Timocles). Blitz were able to capitalise on the extra man for the first couple of points, although we made it a little hard for them getting a couple of ds, they were equally able to shut down our offense. Blitz went up 2-0 before Tomsteve showed up. With 7 we were able to work on our zone defense which turned out to be pretty successful in generating blocks throughout the entire night. Our offense also looked pretty good in the first half and we were able to go on a 8-2 run to take half 8-4. After half, Blitz were able to put a bit more pressure on our offense and get quite a few return ds. Points were pretty scrappy shortly after half with a run of multiple possession points going mostly the way of blitz until they were only down 9-8 and pretty fired up to continue the run.

Our offense was still shaky at this point, giving up easy turns but we were able to get enough back to be up 11-8 at time cap and then losing the last point to win 11-9. Both sides looked pretty fatigued on defense and there was definitely a lot of room for fast paced offense and give and gos which Blitz punished us with early in the second half although they often couldn't quite get the last pass in.

It was great to get our second win of the season, even if it was a pretty scrappy game. Shout out to Tyson for running pretty much all night as the middle of our zone and as a popper and to Mitch/Syakir for getting about 5 goals with passes between themselves.

Bugs - Mat
As we sat on the sideline after the game, drinking Sols with lime, I kinda promised the lads a rant.
I had a crack but after my 5th Sol my rant turned the way of all rants… random, mindless and utterly unamusing drivel …. Much like the weekly Cobras report.

So I’ll give you the facts instead:
Cobras over the Bugs at Universe point.  13-12.
Buggers started just like last week, savage with Tony only filling the line for a couple of points while Ferg made his way to ARC from the airport.
Ferg’s efforts on Thurs should be mentioned – once again he chased all night at the pointy end of what is proving to be a very effective Buggers Defensive system, and then handled all night on O.  Sterling effort.
We took serve and then traded for a few, gradually pulling away to 9-6.  But at that point the numbers hit us and fatigue probably forced a few errors that we have almost eliminated in recent weeks.
We lost focus for 5mins, letting Cobras score 5 straight to take it out to 11-9.
We broke back twice, and it was 12-all at Universe point which they took.

The feeling after the game was that we were the better team for most of it, except for a short lapse in the 3rd quarter.
We know we have a lot left in the tank for the rest of the season.

So upon review of this report, I realise there’s not really even a hint of rant in there.
But there is perhaps room for a little mini rant.   I make no apologies.  It is mindless and of no consequence whatsoever.  But hey..

WTF!!  Heroes have a bye week and by virtue of the points system they rocket from 5th on the table to 3rd, based upon the Buggers and Dojo results.
How awesome is that?  Don’t turn up and be promoted up into finals contention.  Sweet for the Heroes.  Maybe you Heroes guys should not turn up more often???

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I felt so rubbish after a game. We wanted to win this one against slamtown, and there were a lot of long points there were it felt we were playing some quality Ultimate. But this didn't reflect when it came to actually scoring, and we didn't get the basics right when it came to the end zone.

For me, the slamtown and cobras games are the acid test - we can beat bugs/heroes/anyone else when it comes to a single match, but if we can't mix it with the two teams forging ahead in the table (albeit it Cobras earlier in the season) then we're not a chance.

On a good note, Fatty was awesome on D once again, and even though his scoring didn't reflect it (around half of slammers points!) Pallen and Wallsy did a good job of keeping the new new Chris working hard.

I had a beer at the end with Slamtown - two beer rounds is better than one beer round!
