The season was extended, and weather the masses were happy with the decision or not, it has gone ahead. And though it was a bit of an odd circumstance, it does present some excellent matchups in the final week of play. As far as I'm concerned, the second season starts now... and though it's not officially an 'elimination' round for all teams, it will be for 2, and for the rest it will very much be a barometer for what is to be expected in the semi's and beyond.
Let's have a closer look at our match up's
Cobras v Buggs - The buggs can't move from 3rd spot, win or lose. The Cobras can't move any higher than 5th. That said, the Cobras have come on strong at the end of the season, and could be argued to be playing better ultimate than either the Heroes or Blitz at present. But they're lying in the bed they made, and as such this will be their last game, so I'm sure they'll be firing to steal one to close out their season. They fought hard against the Dojo last night but gave away a 5 point run in the middle of the game to take themselves out of contention. The Buggs on the other hand have been consistently beating everyone in the comp except last seasons finalists. They have struggled through a few close ones, includeing a 3 point win over the Heroes last night and will definitely want to go into the playoffs on a winning note as they'll see the loser of the Dojo/SFC match the following week.
Slamtown v Dojo - This is for the minor premiership, and perhaps of more importance, to avoid the Buggs in the first round. With even records, and only single losses coming against one another, this rubber match will be the final measure for the top of the table. The Dojo were very aware of Slamtowns quick and decisive victory last night over Blitz, and Sensei parted the field wondering if there were any games left in the round robin, as though this hasn't been on the Dojo radar for the past 5 weeks. Win or lose, either team has plenty of work to go . Either by taking the 'so called' hard road and grinding a win out from the Buggs which would take them into the final with a gritty win and some hardened battling under their belts. Or conversely taking 'the easy road' against the eventual 4 seed and being rested and in rythym for the final. Upon skimming through the sports history books, both of these scenarios have showed promise, and equally as much have accounted for failure. More than anything, it's one last chance for these two teams to get a good feel for how to play one another, and if nothing else (should they both prevail in their semi's) should account for a more competitive, and thus entertaining final.
Heroes v. Blitz - This is ELIMINATION. Winner goes through, loser goes home! The Heroes are coming off the heels of a solid performance, Blitz coming off a solid drubbing. So will the Heroes have the advantage in a weeks time, or will Blitz be able to rebound and turn their anger of defeat into motivation? Whomever gets through could be a very dangerous darkhorse.. the team that gets over looked or taken lightly could be the team that stings you in the end. Referring to my sports history books again, it's quite often that the team with the most outcome implications in late season games can carry the desperation of a must win game in the regular season and manifest a string of wins in the post season. Now this seasons results would certainly suggest that either Blitz or Heroes will really have thier hands full in a semi match up, but regardless, in a one off situation... anything can happen? First things first... get the win, extend your season.
Well folks, there it is, all the hype is laid down... who will win? who will lose? What will the semi's look like? And who will go through to the Grand Final?
Also.... Go vote for a LOGO!!
Just for extra awesomeness, if Heroes and Blitz draw, and Cobras win over Bugs, they stand a good chance of stealing the 4th Finals spot since all three teams would be on the same points - Cobras currently have the best For/Against of the three teams. I'll update the table when all captains come back to me.
