Match Reports and results - 29th November

Hi all, my sincere apologies for the lateness of the match reports from last week - my fault and not the writers. Next year for the BPL final I reckon I'm just going to give each person a 6 pack and call it a day!

Troy officially wins the Match Report of the season with this week's.

Results were Slamtown over Dojo (15-8), and Bugs over Cobras (13-11).

Cobras  (who else but Troy!)

"Now this is the story all about howMy life got flipped, turned upside downAnd I'd like to take a minute just sit right thereI'll tell you how I became the prince of a league called BPL In west Victoria born and raised Up in Sydney i spent my recent days Working late and weekends, like a fool And sinking beers in the Cross like a tool When Johnny Ibrahim was up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight with my boss she got mad And said "You're moving with a random brother and sister in Brisbane" I whistled for a cab and when it came near The license plate said "Cobras" and now had one in the car If anything I could say that this cab did smell But I thought nah, forget it, yo homes to BPL! I pulled up to a fields about seven that night And I yelled to the cabby "Yo, homes smell you later!" Looked at my kingdom I tripped and fell Trying to sit on my throne as the prince of BPL

Cobras lost however the story of the night was witnessing the worst single moment of sportsmanship I have ever seen in any sport except maybe the Tyson Holyfield fight. You need to pull your head in at moments like that Matt"

Slamtown (Stef)

SFC were fired up for the semi, after a long season, which included a 10 game win streak, there were still many doubters based on our brillian blogging community.  The same blogging community believed that it would be on the heels of Abra and Kocher that we would get things done... 2 players who didn't show up for the semi final.

SFC had players rocking up as the first pull wen't up, and I had to hobble back to the club house for an emergency deuce.  But on the field, it was business as usual.  Slamtown once again played a very team oriented game, and EVERYONE contributed.  We were able to get out of the gates by 4-0 margin, and only extended on that as the game progressed.  Showing an array of different looks on both O and D the Dojo were not able to adapt.  The Slammers generated a plethora of turns from steady pressure, and from some monster bides, while our O, continued to take what was given, and suck the life out of the opposing spirits.

At half time we remained up by 4, and after putting on a hot D line and taking the first point of the second half after pulling, the fat lady began to warm her vocal chords.  Speaking of which, it was hard not to notice the mele on field 2, and alleged reports would have it that some reprimand be taken for some ill advised actions.  While that minor distraction did get our attention, we quickly reverted back to the task at hand, and continued to own the team that foolishly assumed the opposite on their foolish match preview.... nice one Sensei.

As always, it was a well spirited affair with the Dojo, and we wish them the best for their off season, and in rebuilding. ;)

Slamtown now prepare for the Grand Final, and are very much looking forward to the occasion.

Dojo (Sensei... just kidding. Ads).

Okay, my apologies straight away, this is going to be short (and not what a semi-final deserves), too much BPL stuff to get ready for final, and a Captain that earns too much money per hour to do match reports ;)
The Slamtown game went pretty much how I thought it would. Dojo played better than we have in the past month, but it was not at the same standard as the Flatballers. What I was so impressed with was the amount of dudes scoring who weren't in the 'Slamtown Stars' club. It felt like everyone had a hand on the disc on there team, and it showed.
And bloody Kevin got up high in front of me to take a deep point away from me, of which I had forgotten about but was reminded in the highlights package. Thanks a lot Kevy!
He was only here for a season, but Adam Topp (canadian dude) heads back to Calgary this week. Thanks for the awesome season Adam.
I was pretty pumped when I saw Abra and Chris weren't there. But in reality, it let Kalin handle a lot more when he got the disc and the usual perfect blades and scoobers were all over the field. The man is a one man circus!
Thats it. Tell Sensei next time you see him that he should write the match reports next season!

  2. No bugs match report?

Something needs to be done. Reece mentioned what happened; Troy did too. Here's what I saw. Mat and Wetnose collided and fell to the ground. Mat, being the upstanding guy he is, kneed and stepped on Wetnose while Wetnose was still on the ground. That's right. I've seen people thrown out of tournaments for spiking discs on people, laying out into people - lesser infractions than this (in america, the home of bad spirit). I have never seen anyone act this disrespectfully. Mat was back on the field a couple of points later, and played the rest of the game. I realize he has a side to the story - I hoped we'd hear it in a match report.

Here's what needs to happen: each team needs two captains. This isn't the first time we've run into spirit problems with Mat. When it happens, we have no one to communicate with on Bugs. There needs to be a level-headed person on the team we can talk to. This is a serious problem.

My question to Buggers: how do you put up with this? As a team, you have to recognize that Mat is consistently bad spirited. In talks with players during games everyone says 'we can't do anything about it'. You can. Kick him off the team. At least make someone else captain. He clearly isn't mature enough on the field to be a captain. The excuse 'he's a good guy off the field' is not sufficient. I know he is. But we spend our time in BPL on the field, where he is poor spirited and bad for the sport. I genuinely want to hear from the rest of Buggers why you let this happen. I know and respect a lot of you guys, and you are better than this.

If this seems harsh, or an attack on Mat, it should - when you step on someone on my team and ruin a game, you deserve it.

  3. As one of the next most senior members of the Bugs I suppose the onus fall to me to respond.

In my seven years of playing ultimate I have been on 2 teams where we have had to remove one of our players from the field. Funnily enough both times have involved the same player and it wasn't Mat. Do I agree what he did was right, Hell no, in fact I am glad he has to face the music and I applaud the way Ads has been handling the situation. Do I think Wetnose is completely without blame? probably not, but he doesn't deserve to be stomped on.

Why do we put up with this? Who says we have put up with anything. Up until the semi there has been only isolated incidents which have been discussed amongst the more experienced players on the team. I have discussed this with a number of guys on the team this week and to be honest I still don't know the full story.

I have been trying to think of what would have happened in other sports had something similar occurred. Soccer is the only sport i have played where anything close has happened. (There was one incident much worse) Any way I see that both players probably would have received a yellow card after the first foul call, which was contested and sent back. the next foul and knee and stomp would have seen both player sent off. wetnose would have most like served a 2 week suspension which was the standard practice for red cards. Mat would have most likely been sent to a judiciary hearing and if he wasn't banned from the league would have at least got an extended suspension. Much of the suspension would depend on the ref and the type of association.

What do we have to do for BPL so that if an incident happens again? I agree a 2 captain structure is needed. Some thing we need to be aware of is you need to captains playing on the field. I think the structure currently where the LD and the captains decide on the way the league is run i fine. Will we hear more about this before next season? I expect we will.

  4. As we all know, it's very difficult to take disciplinary action in our sport, where the lines between friends, players and administrators are so blurred.

I don't envy the position of Adz and the league captains here (nor that of Mat or Wetnose), but there must absolutely be a response to this incident, especially considering both players have a poor track record.

Judging purely from reports, suspensions seem appropriate; perhaps also removal of "official" captaincy (which doesn't need to affect how teams operate internally, other than ensuring there is another player able to take game-time seniority over them if needed). Leaders, please know that you will have the support of players in taking action on this.

I hope that, whatever the decision, they can recognise the response is against their on-field actions... it's not fun doing this/seeing it happen to friends, and there will be heavy hearts around this whole period... damn.

  9. Hey mate, was trying to do it on my phone, so didn't work out how I wanted. Was an anonymous commenter, not asking questions, just throwing abuse at someone. Three different people emailed me to ask to take it down, and I was happy to. Happy to show it to you if you want to see.
