Match Reviews Round 5

Match reviews below, table updated on right.

Cobras - Troy
There are a few things that are less disputable than statistics and there is a stat that has recently starting being recorded in ultimate and it is revolutionising the game. I know what some of you are thinking, we already have all the statistics covered: points played, goals thrown, goals caught, turnovers, reasons why they're not Reece's fault and of course pulls dropped. But the new statistic gives us the best guide for who is really changing games. Yes I am of course talking about goal conversions and as far a BPL goes there is a man who is clearly in first place on this stat, second place has been awarded to daylight and then there was such a big gap before the next person that we ran out of daylight and had to award third place to street lights, then I think they the stats showed that Buzz is in forth place. But the man of the moment is the man is Mr. Blue Tooth himself Dave W. We called him for a comment on how he came to be able to dominate a category in such an uncompromising way? Unfortunately the only comment we got was "Hi this is Dave W, I can't take your call right now I speaking with friends, you can leave a message if you want." It is this kind of extreme efficiency that has hurtled Dave W to the top of such a sought after and game changing statistic.

Cobras won 15-9

Blitz 2 -Cunliffe
B2 knew it was going to be a challenge to take it to the 2012 finalists who now have seen the return of some experienced vets to complement some fresh young legs and solid imports, but the young B2 boys didn't shy away from the occasion and were quick to jump to a 2 point league after the opening points.

Though from that point forward the night was well and truly won by the Bugs who ran away to a 15 v 6 victory. Some solid zone got the better of
B2 on most points.

It really was an impressive display of zone with lots of hustle up front from Ferg and Zev, some sneaky poaching and awareness from Jangles in the middle, and some very tall and quick units at the back with Mike and Trev.

Well played Bugs - but the B2 boys are learning quickly and are VERY eager for our second round clash!

Blitz 1 - Myles
Blitz and Slamtown squared off for the first time this season with a total of 15 players across the teams. Slamtown playing savage for the first half were down 0-3 before rallying and taking half (8-7). Blitz was ruined by execution errors early in the game, but reined it in for the most part to play a tight second half. Last point came around with a chance for Blitz to tie the game, but Slamtown didn’t oblige, holding onto the disc to win it 11-9.

Dojo - ads
Even though Sensei boasted about a new keyboard and a new 'W' key, it was all hot air apparently.

Heroes came out strong, and we matched point for point until around 4. They played hard, and got a lot   of disc for their trouble. They threw long a fair bit during the game, and almost 100% successful. They had a pickup you looked young and inexperienced, but somehow I missed the fact that he was 6'2 and could run. With the rookie tag, he managed to out position and score on some of the best of Dojo's deeps (Hi Pete!) a few times until we stopped being silly.

At some stage we kicked it up a notch and never looked back - a fairly oppressive zone was the main element, but lots of short throws and good cutting worked on offence.

Lets face it, you're all reading until the end to hear about Pete's gloves. Yes he wore them. Yes he dropped about 4 easy catches. Yes he wore them on Monday night. Yes he looked like a cross between Michael Jackson and a giraffe.

  1. Slamtown - Mayor
Myles gave a good review of the game.
He also played sensationally, really giving his team a chance to stay in it.
However, when push came to shove, Slammers had a bit more umph.
Troy Booth likely to have done some inappropriate staring... or potentially touching.

  2. Troy Booth did do some inappropriate things throughout the week, however these followed the events explained below.

It was around 3pm on Saturday and many of the players from the BPL found themselves in Canberra at BCI. Firestorm were taking on a Chilly outfit who was fresh from tearing apart Colony and Fishwick. Firestorm had to do some soul searching after what mush have been a gut wrenching defeat after leading Colony throughout most of the game. The game between Chilly and Firestorm started out very even early due to hard work from many players and a great pack grab from Pete Allen. From here there was a slight change in defence matchups by Chilly leading to a diminished impact from the Cobra brigade that worked so hard for Firestorm and from this Chilly managed to pull away for a time. This was until one man decided to show more than just the BPL why he is the MVP, BW stepped up and made a whole point his own, it was one of the more impressive points I have seen in a long time. In the end Chilly were able to work their way to a victory despite a late comeback from Firestorm. The inappropriate staring came later in the night, I was looking for Slamtown players but just ended up looking off into the distance, as none could be found representing the BPL at this the most elite tournament Australia has to offer, as a result a girl thought I was staring at her. If you ask any player on a top team this tournament is the place to be as you never have to deal with the 15-3 type games that take up the first couple of days at nationals. Congrats to all the Firestorm boys who showed that they deserved to be in this bracket with some great games throughout the tournament including a very impressive win over HoS.

    1. Hmm, time for a quick game of who posted anonymously?

My first thought was to rule out Stef, myself, BW and Ads as we have all posted against our names on this post. This however didn't achieve much in determining who it was. I then was able to rule out all the players who went to BCI so Firestorm players are in the clear. We can also rule out anyone who plays BUML div 1 as all these teams have a Firestorm player so anyone with this level of interest/scepticism would have asked about the weekend. This then leaves players who know the level of BCI and either aren’t playing nats this year or play for Slamtown. I’d suggest that people who simply aren’t playing nats would have had a amicable parting with Firestorm so wouldn’t doubt their old team. This unfortunately leaves the Slamtown boys and primarily those who have previously played for Firestorm.

Or alternative it could have just been someone who posted from their phone (This option was less fun to deduce).
